Asgard Alaska Incorporated was formed for the charitable and educational purposes of educating, entertaining, and inspiring Alaskans to come together for activities in the history-centric environments we create. Picture a Viking village on an Alaska hillside: turf roofs, a longhouse hall, woodsmoke, and people of every age learning the old ways firsthand. That is the mission made real — history Alaskans can see, hear, taste and try.
Mythology
Few cultures left a mythology as vivid as the Norse. In the Eddas, Asgard is the home of the Aesir gods, and within it stands Valhalla, Odin’s vast hall, where warriors who fell in battle fight each day and feast each night. The real history is just as remarkable. Around the year 1000, Norse Greenlanders reached North America, five centuries before Columbus. Their camp at L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and tree-ring evidence places them there in 1021. Their legacy can still be visited from Newfoundland to Normandy.
Events
Participation in our events fosters history education in a safe, fun, outdoor setting where guests learn about ancient civilizations and experience the ways they lived. Asgard Alaska brings history to life with the sights and sounds of historical civilizations coming alive through music, laughter, children playing, cooking, and campfires. Anyone can read a book about history or watch a movie about it. Asgard’s experience will leave an indelible impression on the public as they observe, live, and experience the sights, sounds, smells, and feelings firsthand.
The Settlement
The open-air museum will include a reconstructed Viking settlement, historical art and cultural exhibits, most of them built or gathered by our volunteers and staff. Visitors will be invited to dress the part and try what the Norse did every day: cooking, archery, blacksmithing, swordplay, and seasonal festivals. A great longhouse will host special events.
Once the grounds are complete, school groups, scouting troops, historical re-enactment groups, and other organizations will be welcomed to use the space for tours, camps, and retreats in Asgard Alaska’s unique environment. A campground will also provide tent sites and unique Viking turf houses/cabins for overnight guests. Furthermore, for those who like to wander, RV sites will be available for our mobile guests. These sites will blend in so they do not interfere with the immersive Viking experience.
