How the Viking Name Generator Builds Your Name
Every name is built the way a Norse family would have built it, from three parts. First comes a real Old Norse first name, picked from 145 men’s and 115 women’s names, each shown in its Old Norse spelling with what it means. Next comes a name from a parent: your father’s or mother’s name, turned into -son for a son or -dóttir for a daughter. Some names also get a byname, one of 24 nicknames real Vikings were known by, or a trait you type in yourself. For the story behind each part, read How Did Vikings Get Their Names?
What the Asferg Stone Says
Names like these were carved in stone. The Asferg runestone in the photo was raised in Denmark in the Viking Age and stands today in the National Museum of Denmark. Its runes say that Þorgeirr raised it in memory of his brother Múli, “a very good thegn,” a man in a lord’s service. Two Viking names, still readable a thousand years later.
Questions People Ask
Each first name is a real Old Norse name, and the name from a parent is built the way the Norse built theirs. The whole combination is new, so you are its first owner.
Many Vikings were known by a byname that described them, like Olaf the White. The generator adds one to some names, and you can type your own trait instead.
