JORVIK Viking Centre Unleashes Winter Weather

For 40 years, the JORVIK Viking Centre has showcased Viking-age Coppergate in its springtime splendor. That changed in November 2024 when the underground attraction in York, England, was transformed with a dusting of snow for the holidays.

Bone ice skates discovered at an archaeological site inspired the JORVIK Viking Centre’s new winter look. To reflect the snowy 10th-century York, the Vikings have donned their winter furs and hats. But the ice skates aren’t the only reason for this frosty transformation.

“York is a fabulous place to visit during the winter – the Christmas markets, the Ice Trail in January, and, of course, the JORVIK Viking Festival in February,” said Gareth Henry, head of operations, in a press release. “We want Winter in JORVIK to be one of the highlights of the season.”

The experience begins with an introduction to the Coppergate archaeological site. Guests then board “Time Sleighs” to journey through York (called Jorvik by the Vikings) during the winter of AD 960. The tour concludes in a cozy Viking house by a fire, where a skald shares tales of gods, monsters, and what the Vikings needed to survive the winter.

This exhibit runs through February 22, 2025, and is currently a “one-off opportunity.” Guests must pre-book their spots as no tickets are sold at the door. Visitors who prefer to pay with cash can do so at the admission desk. There, they’ll be informed of the next available time slot. Tickets cost £16.50 for adults, £13.25 for concessions, and £11 for children. Family tickets are also available.

The Coppergate dig concluded in 1981. Following its success, the York Archaeological Trust aimed to share the story of the Vikings in York and England while displaying the artifacts for public benefit. The JORVIK Viking Centre officially opened its doors on April 14, 1984.
